I was super excited to hear about their new writing campaign called
Fight for Your Write
I am a writing teacher
and so this had me wanting to know
what better way to explain it... but to give it to you exactly how they presented it to me...
BIC’s main goal this year is to encourage students to write more often, because writing is by far one of the most important learning tools for a child’s academic success and growth. As you know, writing fosters children’s emotional and cognitive development, helps foster critical thinking skills and improves academic achievement.
To help achieve our goal, BIC has launched the “Fight for Your Write” campaign, which reinforces how fun and empowering writing can be. The campaign, which can be found at www.bicfightforyourwrite.com, offers information about writing and tips from literacy expert Pam Allyn to help parents, caregivers and students make a commitment to write more often.
I couldn't have explained it any better...
it makes me giddy to know BiC has the same opinions about writing as I do...
I am passionate about getting our kiddos to write...
so on to the review...
ONE or TWO of the things that really caught my eye
were the KIDS pencil and pen

I was surprised at the high percentage of students who are not handwriting proficient!
ReplyDeleteI am surprised more isn't done to encourage writing. I teach Early Childhood and we really encourage writing. We use lots of writing materials & tools
ReplyDeleteI love that BIC is encouraging writing to all kids through fun writing tools!
ReplyDeleteI love the push to save handwriting! My third graders are always so excited to learn cursive. It really helps writers to get their thoughts on paper so much faster. The excessive push for testing and filling in circles is ridiculous. We need to save writing!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this!! I found "5 Fun Ways to Get Your Preschooler Writing" on their page. Love love love the ideas!! As a kindergarten teacher I feel like this would be great to share with parents who will have incoming kindergarten kiddos. Writing is so important and such a great way for kids to be creative and get their ideas on paper!

Kinder and 1st grade teachers spend sooo much time working with their kiddos on handwriting. I just move to 4th and I was surprised not one of my 58 kiddos writes in cursive but I understand there's just no time in the schedule. I say bring back handwriting into the curriculum. Excited to see BICs fun writing tools!
ReplyDeleteDuring writing I have kids use blue pen. My fourth graders love it.
ReplyDeleteBUB IS ADORABLE!!! I love little kids' voices. Mine are big now and when we watch video of them when they were small, we realize how we forgot how precious they used to sound. Treasure this time! Oh, and I love those pens and pencils from Bic. I have never seen the new kinds. Some of my third graders still don't hold a pencil correctly. I may suggest these at parent night next week if I can find some to show before then. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWell...you KNOW I love teaching writing! I'm with you...glad that BIC shares the same ideas about writing. Those statistics are scary, but it doesn't surprise me...unfortunately. I want these to use in my classroom!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteCould he possibly be ANY cuter?! I'm super curious about these pencils now. I guess I'll have to go to Target and grab some....or darn! LOL
ReplyDeleteI love the label on the pencil..my kiddos are always saying..."he has my pencil." I love being able to try the products before I buy..thanks for sharing....Bubs is so stinkin' adorable!!! Fun times ahead...
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bubs! Bic makes kid friendly pens and pencils!
ReplyDeleteToo cute!! I like that yellow line that helps kids hold the pencil correctly. That is awesome!

Love that Bic is taking on the challenge of increasing students need to write. They would sell pens and pencils anyway, but to see the company advancing the discussing and putting out great products like the student mechanical pencils is terrific. My special ed students would love them!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bic! Love the products that are enticing to students. Writing is such an essential element that students need to have and be good at!
ReplyDeleteI like the summer tips for writing. My 4th grader struggles with writing and as a kindergarten teacher I don't feel like I have good ideas for helping her. This has encouraged me to keep working with her. I also must say... I have three girls who have been writing in cursive since they could write but I have friends who are mortified because their kids were never taught. I've been lucky and my two older daughters' had the same 5th grade teacher who was REALLY specific about teaching cursive and it's back in the curriculum. Yay!
ReplyDeleteI love Bic products. I had not seen the pencils for correct grasping before. I agree that taking notes in writing helps students retain information, especially tactile kinestetic learners.
ReplyDeleteI love the Tools and Tips sections in addition to the pencils for correcting pencil grasp
ReplyDeleteLove the KIDS pencils. So appreciate the labeling option on each one! The way they support a correct pencil grasp is such a winner for me and my students. Know to afford a classroom set! Thanks for your post.
ReplyDeleteI was very surprised at the statistics they shared about writing!! I agree very much that writing down notes is a much more effective to remember facts long term. I am very grateful to Bic and to you, Farley, for sharing this with us (AND for ALL you do!). Thanks so much...am sharing your post with the whole staff at my school. :)
ReplyDeleteI love love love that they encourage correct pencil grip. That is soo hard to orrect. Especially when I get them in 3rd grade. Sometimes it is a huge hindrance to their success.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this!! I use different, "cool" pencils, pens, and markers during writer's workshop. I really love the Kid mechanical pencils. I need to get some of these.
ReplyDeleteThere's also a petition to sign on their website. =)
I love the emphasis on handwriting. It's not a part of our curriculum at my school, but I like to make writing super fun and BIC products are great for that! I need the foundations of correct pencil grip & handwriting practice in order for my kiddos to become fantastic writing authors.

Fourth Grade Lemonade
I LOVE it! I often ask "Will students today not have signatures?" Handwriting has been dropped from the curriculum and cursive is almost obsolete! I love the commercial on the BIC website and I'm thinking of showing it to my ELA classes on Monday as an anticipatory set to their writing lesson. I want them to love writing as much as we bloggers do, and what better way to start than with the BIC campaign?
ReplyDeleteWould love for my special ed classroom!
ReplyDeleteI liked the article - The new script is no script at all! We DO teach cursive at my school. I agree with all the reasons the BIC site had. I joined the petition:)
ReplyDeleteI happy to hear about this campaign and hope others are as well. Although we have a curriculum for handwriting, we do not have consistency within our school. It's sad to think that handwriting isn't as important to some as it should be.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter started kindergarten this year and I'm sure she would LOVE using these at home. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this campaign! I think these writing implements will be an awesome self-confidence boost!
ReplyDeleteI really love BIC products, however I have yet to try these out, so thanks for sharing. When I headed over to the Fight For Your Write Page, I love how one of the fun facts that was on a page I was reading said that handwriting engages 14 different abilities. Makes you really think that even though it's something we do so often, that we really need to focus on it and not let it slip behind. I teach 3rd grade so I teach cursive, and kids are excited, but by the end of they year they are tired of it and some don't want to write anything. I'm always looking for ways to keep it going! Thanks for sharing.

I love their section called, "How Handwriting Can Make YOU Awesome!". I think it totally validates all of the handwriting practice we do each day!
ReplyDeleteI was so happy to see the section titled "Handwriting Engages 14 Different Abilities". So many people dismiss handwriting as not important, but they don't realize how many different skills are involved and that practicing those skills is vital to their developmental process! Hurray for Bic!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved that they have 32K signatures already + mine! I think this is a very important discussion, but I'm afraid that those of us who believe in the importance of writing may be in the minority!

ReplyDeleteIt's funny how many kids don't like to write. Not even writing a story or an essay, but just don't like to write - copy a sentence off a board, write down a definition. It's a little sad. Here's hoping we can change all that.
ReplyDeleteI also love the "tips that will inspire students writing"...using colors and markers to write! Plus the idea of writing someone famous. My class once wrote letters to Tomie dePoala and he sent us postcards back! It was great!

The Disneyfied Teacher
I knew that writing involved different skills but I didn't realize what the skills were. I was sad to see how many kids don't write.
ReplyDeleteUGH. I just lost my comment. Without reinventing the wheel, I said that I liked the download section and couldn't believe the statistics. And, this is such a great idea...why didn't anyone think of it sooner! :)
ReplyDeleteI guess this is why Florida added the handwriting standard into the Florida Standards! I am going to share this with my colleagues just to show the statistics. I hope I can integrate this with fidelity.

I love that they had the petition to keep handwriting. In Arizona, it is not a standard but it really should be. I have fourth graders who cannot write at all!
ReplyDeleteI like the Links/Info for Parents & Educators.
ReplyDeleteWhat a unique giveaway! Great idea!

Tales of Teaching in Heels
These look awesome! A fun pen or pencil always makes writing a little more fun.
ReplyDeleteI love it all! The fun supplies, and the message they are sending.
ReplyDeleteI like the "How Handwriting Can Make YOU Awesome! section
ReplyDeleteBic, so glad you developed products geared toward kids...making writing fun is a BIG step in getting kiddos to write more often and enjoy it! Love the tips, too!
ReplyDeleteBub is so cute! I can't really make hearts that well. ADORBS! I liked this stat I found 12% of teachers across the US had college-level courses that prepared them to teach handwriting. I had to take a printing test to pass one of my classes!

I also had to pass a handwriting test in college. It was part of our final exam in my LA class for Elementary .... I can still hear my beloved professor, Dr. Mize, tell us we could NOT mark off for incorrect letter formations if we couldn't form the letters correctly ourselves. Part of our final exam was printing the upper and lower case letters on the writing paper she passed out to us.....one of the students in my class failed that part of the exam...and she had been warned.
DeleteLoved the new Brite Highlighter pens. We use these so much for finding text evidence in reading.
ReplyDeleteI love all the resorces that are on the website for both parents and teachers! I also love the new pens and writing tools BIC has out now! This would be great to win!
ReplyDeleteHandwriting can have benefits for cognitive development, motor skills and creativity.
ReplyDeleteI agree, writing can be very empowering and it will really be great if kids will be encouraged to write at a young age. By the way, I love the pencil! It will definitely help kids hold pencils correctly and write properly!
ReplyDeleteI am surprised to know that writing engages 14 different abilities.
